the way it all crashes

do you remember the way car washes made you feel when you were younger
when you stopped being scared of them and realized they made every song sound better
and your dad was a king in the driver’s seat.
waves crashed and crashed over the dark blue minivan and you could have been anywhere.
things are different now, you’re twenty-two, not six, you’re driving your own car
it’s not even a car wash but a thunderstorm and it’s the first day that smells like spring and you’re with a friend who bleeds sunshine.
still, waves crash around you, still they carry you
the king from the car wash who fought to play Simon & Garfunkel is long gone but still
you feel safe.
still you’re here and feel that same feeling of your entire heart engulfed and
still you know you’re going to go on.
